APPLICATION LETTER APPLICATION LETTER APPLICATION LETTER

The season is here again when one sees Application Letters nearly daily.

Important Tips

Use clean A4 paper and a professional font if typing. People like me do prefer handwritten ones. This is because handwriting matters a lot, to me.

Address the letter to the correct person whenever possible.

State the exact position being applied for.

Keep the letter to one page.

Avoid grammatical and spelling errors.

Highlight qualifications, experience, and achievements relevant to the vacancy.

End politely and attach the required documents (CV, certificates, passport photograph if requested, etc.).

Take note of this principle:

Do not send the same application letter to every school.

Read the vacancy carefully and tailor the letter to show how your qualifications and experience match the school's needs.

This greatly increases your chances of being shortlisted.

THE TEACHERS' TRANSFER MARKET AND THE IMPORTANCE OF A PROFESSIONAL CV

As we enter the teachers' "transfer market" season, a period when many educators move from one school to another in search of better opportunities, it is important to highlight the significance of a well-written and professional CV.

Yesterday alone, I received about 20 CVs from teachers seeking employment opportunities. Sadly, after reviewing them, I can confidently say that more than 50% are unlikely to make it to the interview stage, not because the applicants are not competent, experienced, or qualified, but because their CVs fail to make a convincing first impression.

Over the years, while recruiting teachers for various schools, I have encountered numerous poorly prepared CVs. Many are copied from online templates with little or no modification, while others are riddled with grammatical errors, poor formatting, incomplete information, and a failure to adequately showcase the candidate's strengths and achievements.

Teachers must understand that a CV is more than just a document; it is your personal brand and your first introduction to a prospective employer. Before anyone assesses your teaching ability, classroom management skills, or professional experience, your CV has already spoken on your behalf.

Unfortunately, many school owners and administrators spend only a few moments reviewing an application before deciding whether to proceed. This means that a poorly presented CV can cost you an opportunity you may have been fully qualified for.

While I occasionally advise applicants to make certain corrections before submitting their applications, it is neither practical nor possible to review and edit every CV that comes my way. Therefore, teachers must take deliberate steps to ensure that their CVs are:

- Professional and well-structured.
- Free from grammatical and spelling errors.
- Accurate and up-to-date.
- Tailored to the position being applied for.
- Capable of presenting their qualifications, experience, and achievements effectively.

Remember, your qualifications may make you eligible for a job, but your CV often determines whether you will be invited to prove yourself.

A good teacher deserves a good CV. Do not allow a poorly prepared CV to stand between you and your next opportunity.
