Good afternoon dear colleagues in progress.
It is with utmost courage I want to share this important information with this body. I hope that necessary action will be propelled to bring sanity and normalcy to this issue.
This important issue is the way BECE Maths examination is formatted. Right from the year 2020 till date , I will appreciate if this body and intelligent maths teachers can go through the objective questions being set by the WAEC board for our students.
The following are my observations as a maths teacher.
1. Some of the objectives questions given to these students are too high for their level. To be precise, if these questions are given to some senior students and some University undergraduates or graduates inclusive may be found difficult to handle.
2. Some of these questions require a mathematical table or calculator to solve. Whereas , such was not allowed at that level. How can you imagine given these students calculations on trigonometry of angles that are not even special angles, with no hints given like, tan= ?, cos= ? , sin= ?, as they use to do previously.
3. I also discovered from an impeccable source that the candidates of big schools where millions of naira are paid per term are always allowed to make use of different sophisticated calculators , whereby our own students are prohibited from using same. No wonder, the schools are involving in examination malpractices having discovered that the candidates at that level cannot solve most of these questions.
I stumbled across the last BECE Maths exam's question paper, I wondered what the students wrote down. Could that have been the reason why the result is yet to be released?
To be candid, we really need to critically question those agents or examiners put in charge of setting these questions if they really know what they are doing or there is something they are trying to portray that is hidden from our view.
If students of different background were allowed to sit for the same exam, and some preferential treatments or privileged are given to one set at the detriment of another, I think a drastic action should be taken to sanitise the system involved.
I am able to bring this to limelight because I am for donkeys year involve in the settings of these two backgrounds.
I will appreciate a critical investigation into this matter by this body , and let us see what can be done to assuage a situation whereby our students and some schools are pushed into involving in examination malpractices.
Having discussed this issue with one of this body's executives, in which he also agreed that such have been observed, but unfortunately, nothing has been done about it.
We should use this medium to raise it up to reach the right authority in order not to let our children believe that it is only throygh dubious means they can achieve success in life.
If the exam is set according to their level standard and if it should be above, the necessary needs to accomplish this should be allowed.
I come in peace.
