Before You Accept That Course… Read This First
Let’s be very honest with ourselves—especially in Nigeria today.
Every year, many JAMBites tell themselves:
“If I don’t get Medicine, Pharmacy or Nursing, let me just take something related. It’s still medical.”
My dear… it doesn’t always work like that.
Someone once told me:
“My score didn’t reach for Pharmacy, so they gave me Pharmacology. At least I’m still in the health line.”
I just sighed… because nobody told them the full truth.
Here’s the reality most people avoid:
A BSc Pharmacology graduate is NOT a pharmacist.
You won’t own a pharmacy.
You won’t dispense drugs.
You won’t sign anything under PCN.
After school, you’ll most likely face:
– “You need MSc”
– “You need PhD”
– “You need experience”
Same thing with Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry…
You graduate, wear your fine white coat for pictures… then reality sets in:
No direct hospital role.
No structured internship.
No clear professional path immediately.
Meanwhile, your friends in:
Medicine
Pharmacy
Nursing
Medical Lab Science
Physiotherapy
Radiotherapy
…already have a defined route:
House job / Internship → NYSC → Job opportunities
Some even start earning earlier through placements.
This is not to insult any course.
It’s just to tell you what nobody explains during admission season:
Not every “medical-sounding” course leads to clinical practice.
Not every degree has a ready-made job pathway in Nigeria.
And that’s where many people get shocked after 4–5 years.
So before you quickly accept that “related course” just because you don’t want to stay at home…
Ask yourself:
– What exactly can I do with this degree after graduation?
– Do I need postgraduate studies before I become relevant?
– Am I ready for that journey?
Sometimes, waiting one more year and going for what you truly want is better than spending years trying to “convert” a degree later.
No pressure. No fear.
Just understand your choice before you make it.
Because in this country, information is what saves you from regret.
