Concerns Over the 2026 World Teachers’ Day Celebration by NUT.

*A CALL FOR ACCOUNTABILITY, TRANSPARENCY AND BETTER WELFARE.*

*Concerns Over the 2026 World Teachers’ Day Celebration by NUT, Ikorodu Branch.*

The 2026 World Teachers’ Day celebration has come and gone, but serious concerns have emerged regarding the planning, logistics and welfare arrangements of the event organised by the NUT, Ikorodu Branch.

This is not an attack on the NUT or its leadership. It is a legitimate call for transparency, accountability, responsible leadership and improved teachers’ welfare.

*WHERE IS THE ACCOUNTABILITY FOR OUR UNION DUES?*

Teachers contribute monthly union dues, reportedly ₦2,226.84 per teacher as of September 2026. Teachers therefore have every right to ask:

*How are these contributions being utilized?*

If teachers contribute throughout the year, they should reasonably expect effective representation, welfare and well-organised programmes.

*CONCERNS ABOUT THE 2026 CELEBRATION.*

Reports from participating schools indicate that some schools were allocated only 12 plates of food despite having 30 or more teachers. There were also reported shortages of water, tables, chairs and canopies, with some teachers allegedly struggling for seating.

*The issue is not simply about food. It is about planning, fairness, dignity and proper consideration for the number of teachers represented.*

For an event that occurs only once a year to honour teachers, these arrangements deserve explanation.

*QUESTIONS FOR THE BRANCH LEADERSHIP.*

The leadership under Comr. Dawodu, Branch Leader, NUT Ikorodu, should provide clarity on:

1. What was the approved budget for the 2026 World Teachers’ Day celebration?
2. How much was actually spent?
3. What sources funded the programme, including whether union dues were involved?
4. How many teachers were used in determining the catering requirements?
5. Why were some schools allocated only 12 plates despite having significantly more teachers?
6. What arrangements were made for water, seating and canopies?
7. Who handled procurement and logistics?
8. Were quotations obtained from vendors?
9. What measures were put in place to accommodate unexpected needs?
10. Why did the final arrangements reportedly fall short of the number of teachers expected?

These are legitimate accountability questions, not acts of disrespect.

*WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN GOING FORWARD?*

To prevent a recurrence, we call for:

* A transparent financial statement on the 2026 celebration showing the budget, expenditure and balance, where applicable.
* An independent review of the planning and execution of the event.
* Early planning for future World Teachers’ Day celebrations.
* Proper needs assessment based on the actual number of teachers from each school.
* Adequate provision for food, water, seating, canopies and other logistics.
* Better communication and consultation with schools.
* Post-event evaluation to identify shortcomings and improve future programmes.
* Regular financial accountability to members.
* Where shortcomings are acknowledged, an official apology to teachers would demonstrate responsibility and respect.

*A MESSAGE TO NUT IKORODU LEADERSHIP.*

Comr. Dawodu and the leadership of NUT, Ikorodu Branch, teachers are not demanding extravagance. They are demanding fairness, dignity, transparency and responsible leadership.

Teachers contribute to the union throughout the year. Therefore, they deserve to know how their contributions are being managed and should be able to raise legitimate concerns without intimidation or victimisation.

*This is not about food. It is about dignity.*
*This is not about confrontation. It is about accountability.*
*This is not about destroying the union. It is about making it stronger.*

The shortcomings of the 2026 celebration should be treated as an opportunity for reflection and reform.

*Let accountability strengthen the union.*
*Let transparency restore confidence.*
*Let better planning produce a better 2027.*
*And let the welfare and dignity of teachers remain at the heart of NUT leadership.*

*Teachers deserve better.*

The NUT deserves stronger accountability.
*Our union must work better for every teacher.*
