There is a reason I have refused to outsource the entire education of my children to school.
See eehh, School is important. I believe in school. Praise, Amara and Mma goes to school and will continue to receive formal education.
But as a father, I have come to understand that secondary school is only one part of education.
Whoever controls your childs education will have a strong influence on their identity.... Now you have outsourced all education to the school.
If all I do is pay school fees, buy textbooks, check results and ask, “What position did you take?” then I have handed over too much of my responsibility as a parent.
Today is Sunday and I will like you to take time and read through these three educations every child needs.
1. HOME EDUCATION.... WHO ARE YOU?
This is the first and most important school.
Before Mathematics, Chemistry and English Language, a child should be learning identity.
Who are we?
What do we believe?
What are our values?
How do we treat people?
What does our faith teach us?
What does integrity mean?
What does hard work mean?
What does money mean?
How do we respond when we fail?
What kind of person do we want to become?
This education cannot be completely outsourced to a teacher.
The home must teach identity before the world starts offering the child different identities.
This is why I talk with my children and buy them more book than I buy them clothes.
We discuss books, money, business, God.
We also discuss mistakes, relationships and some of things we sees online.
Sometimes I agree with their perspective and sometimes I correct them. That is education.
A child should not only know the history of other people. He should know the history, values and expectations of his own family.
If you don't intentionally teach your children who they are, don't be surprised when social media, friends, celebrities and strangers volunteer for the job.
2. LIFE EDUCATION.... WHAT CAN YOU DO?
This is another education many parents overlook.
A child can have excellent WAEC results and still not know how to sell an idea, manage money, speak confidently, handle rejection, solve a customer's problem or create something people are willing to pay for.
That is why I expose them all to real life.
They reads books and tells me their takeaways. They comes around the business and see my conversations.
They learn content creation, shoot videos and edits them
Recently, after reading my book, he decided to use the book itself to practise sales and marketing. And he sold over 100 of my books.
He put up his tripod, recorded himself and edited the video. That is education too.
Sometimes the lesson is not inside a classroom, because a customer can be a lecturer and a failed attempt can be an examination.
Now, the market can become your classroom, where a mentor becomes your professor and the difficult problems becomes your assignment.
Our children needs early exposure to skills, money, communication, technology, creativity, leadership, sales, service and problem-solving.
Don't wait until your child graduates from university before asking, “What can you do?”
Start asking while they are young.
3. SCHOOL EDUCATION.... WHAT DO YOU KNOW?
Formal education remains valuable.
It gives children literacy, numeracy, academic foundations, discipline, structured learning, friendships and access to professions that require formal qualifications.
But school was never designed to teach everything your child will need for life.
A school can teach your child accounting, but you may still need to teach them stewardship.
A school can teach English, but you may still need to teach them how to communicate with confidence.
A school can teach Economics, but you may still need to teach them how money behaves in a real household or business.
So I don't want my children to choose between education and experience.
I want them to have both.....I want them educated in school, educated at home and educated by real life.
Parents, our responsibility is bigger than paying school fees. Know that we are custodians of identity.
As parents, I want us to carefully take a journal and answer the following questions... take time to think and answer
1. What is my child learning at home that school cannot teach?
2. What real-life skills am I deliberately exposing my child to?
3. Who is shaping my child's beliefs about money, work, faith, relationships, success and failure?
When you answer this, you will understand that education is not merely the transfer of information, but the formation of a human being.
School may help prepare your child for an examination, but the family must help prepare the child for life.
For me, the goal is not just to raise my children to become a graduate.
I want to raise someone who knows God, knows himself, can think, can create, can communicate, can earn, can manage, can lead and can solve problems for humanity.
That is the education I am interested in.
I am the Billionaire Mechanic, I practice what I teach and share my experience... Please, don't just send your children to school, help in educating them.
Share this to every parent and challenge their understanding about education.
