EXAMINATION MALPRACTICE IN WAEC

THE ALARMING STATE OF EXAMINATION MALPRACTICE IN WAEC

The growing rate of examination malpractice in WAEC has become a serious concern that deserves urgent national attention. What was once considered an isolated act by a few desperate candidates has gradually evolved into a widespread culture involving multiple stakeholders within the education system.

Today, examination malpractice is no longer driven by students alone. In some cases, teachers, school owners, parents, supervisors, invigilators, and even examination officials have become active participants in a system that prioritizes excellent grades over genuine learning. The desire to record outstanding results, attract more admissions, gain prestige, or avoid failure has created an environment where integrity is often sacrificed.

Many schools now market themselves based on their pass rates rather than the quality of education they provide. Some candidates enter examination halls with unauthorized materials, while others rely on leaked questions, organized assistance, and various forms of cheating. Unfortunately, some adults who should be protecting the credibility of the examination process are sometimes found aiding these practices.

The consequences are far-reaching. When students obtain certificates without acquiring the required knowledge and skills, the value of those certificates is diminished. The education system loses credibility, employers begin to doubt academic qualifications, and society ends up with graduates who struggle to perform in the roles for which they are supposedly qualified.

Beyond the educational impact, examination malpractice also contributes to a culture of dishonesty. Students who are taught that success can be achieved through shortcuts may carry the same mindset into their professional and personal lives. A nation that tolerates cheating in its classrooms should not be surprised when corruption becomes widespread in other sectors.

The fight against examination malpractice requires collective responsibility. Parents must stop encouraging shortcuts. Teachers must uphold professional ethics. School owners must prioritize quality education over impressive statistics. Examination bodies must strengthen monitoring and enforcement mechanisms. Government agencies must ensure that offenders face appropriate consequences regardless of their status or influence.

Most importantly, students must understand that the true purpose of education is not merely to obtain certificates but to acquire knowledge, skills, character, and competence. A certificate earned through malpractice may open a door, but it cannot replace the confidence and ability that come from genuine learning.

If we continue to ignore the alarming state of examination malpractice, we risk undermining the very foundation of our educational system. The time has come for all stakeholders to choose integrity over convenience and excellence over shortcuts. The future of our nation depends on it.
