Kings College Crisis Update

King’s College crisis deepens as workers shut school over 35-year concession

The 35-year concession of King’s College, Lagos, to the King’s College Old Boys Association (KCOBA) has triggered a fresh crisis, with workers shutting down the school and parents rejecting the arrangement for fear it could make the Federal Government institution unaffordable to ordinary families.

The workers, under the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN), have declared an indefinite shutdown of the college, while the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) opposed the concession, arguing that students already admitted into the Federal Government school should not be transferred to a privately operated institution midway through their education.

The Nation’s reporter who visited the school on Tuesday observed that the college had been shut indefinitely, with a notice pasted on the gate stating, “Note that the College has shut down for now till further notice. No more registrations till further notice.”

Speaking exclusively with The Nation, PTA Chairman, Engr. Peter Oluwaleye, said parents were concerned that the concession could lead to a significant increase in school fees.

He said many families opted for King’s College because it offers quality education at a subsidised cost, adding that transferring its management to a private entity could put the school beyond the reach of parents who could not afford high private-school fees.

“If we had wanted to put our children in private school, most of us are not capable of doing that because the fees are much higher in private schools,” Oluwaleye said.

The workers also expressed concern over the possible cost implications of the concession.

Unit Chairman of the workers’ union, Comrade Samuel Enang, alleged that fees could eventually rise to between N4 million and N5 million per student if KCOBA takes over the school.

“How many parents in this present economy of the country can afford such education for their children?” Enang asked.

The dispute followed a directive by the Federal Ministry of Education announcing the handover of the college to KCOBA between September 4, 2026, and February 2027.

However, the PTA and workers alleged that they were not adequately consulted before the decision was taken.

The parents are demanding that existing students be allowed to complete their education under the current arrangement if the concession goes ahead.

Oluwaleye proposed a minimum six-year transition period, arguing that KCOBA could begin admitting its own students after those already enrolled had graduated.

“If concession is going to take place, at least you should give it a period of a minimum of six years to consummate,” he said.

The workers, meanwhile, said they remained employees of the Federal Civil Service Commission and rejected any arrangement requiring them to choose between retaining their civil service status and working for KCOBA.

Enang further alleged that the old boys’ association planned to commercialise parts of the college’s property through developments including hotels, shopping malls and car parks.

The allegations have not been independently established.

With the college already shut indefinitely, the dispute could disrupt the academic calendar and has renewed concerns about the future of Nigeria’s Federal Government Unity Colleges under concession arrangements.

FG hands over King’s College Lagos management to Old Boys’ association

‎The Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Education, has formally conceded the management of King’s College, Lagos, to the King’s College Old Boys’ Association (KCOBA).

The development marks a major shift in the administration of the long-established federal secondary school.

The decision was contained in a letter dated September 4, 2026, signed on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, by the Director, Overseeing Office of the Permanent Secretary, Dr Folake Olatunji-David.

In the letter addressed to the Principal of King’s College, the ministry said all processes leading to the signing of the concession agreement had been concluded, resulting in the concession of the college to KCOBA.

The ministry added that arrangements had been concluded to hand over the institution to the old boys’ association with immediate effect for the implementation of the agreement.

As part of the transition process, a Transition Committee will be constituted to facilitate the seamless transfer of the college’s management to KCOBA.

The committee has been given six months to complete the transition, after which funding for the college from the Federation Account will cease.

The ministry consequently directed the school management to activate the necessary arrangements for the smooth transfer of administrative responsibilities to KCOBA.

The Principal was also directed to provide the Transition Committee with a list of staff willing to remain in the employment of the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC).

The concession represents a significant development in the management of one of Nigeria’s oldest secondary schools, as KCOBA prepares to assume a greater role in the institution’s administration and development.

I attended Kings College Lagos from 1995 to 1999, I was a boarder in Panes House and I left because of ill health; I had typhoid twice and the doctor warned that a third time could be fatal so my parents withdrew me and I completed my secondary school at The International School Ibadan.

Every kingsman is very proud to be a KCOB but what many don’t tell you was the very terrible standard of living we had to endure as students of Kings college Lagos. The toilets were a serious eye sore, at the old campus we had about 4 toilets and 4 bathrooms if I can remember and those toilets serviced over 100 students and because of that the toilets were always clogged with poop and we had to pound the toilets with a stick and then pour buckets of water to flush it, because the water system was dead! The toilets were always full of maggots!

How about the food? It was terrible food and sometimes the meat or fish was spoilt or rotten, the beans was tasteless and till today I don’t eat Eba, okro and fish because I will throw up, it was trauma from my days at Kings College Lagos.

Kings Men have always been successful; it is an unwritten rule in Nigeria that if you are a kingsman life is easy because all you have to say to make many doors open for you is “floreat” but it is a pain in the heart of many Kings men that they cannot send their children to a school they love so much because of the standard of living in Kings College Lagos.

It is therefore a welcome development that Kings College Lagos is being privatized and anyone against this development is an enemy of progress not only that they are the people who are benefiting from the rot and collapse of the school.

Kings College deserves to be restored to its lost glory and I am thankful to the Minister of Education Mr Tunji Alausa for making this a priority. Posterity, history and all Kings Men all over the world will forever be grateful to you.
