Your National Housing Fund Money Is Waiting. Here’s How to Collect It.
For all the years in Service from June 2020, 2.5% of your basic salary was deducted Monthly.
It was labeled “Housing Fund” on your payslip.
Most officers retire and never ask about it.
But that money didn’t disappear. It’s with the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN), and you can claim it with interest.
Here’s how:
1. The Money Is Yours by Law
The National Housing Fund Act says every public servant contributes 2.5% of basic salary.
When you retire, resign, or turn 50, you’re entitled to a refund of all contributions + 2% interest per year.
It’s not a loan. It’s your savings. But FMBN won’t pay you automatically. You have to apply.
2. Check If You Have Contributed First before applying, confirm if FMBN has your records.
Do this:
- Go to the nearest FMBN office: IKEJA ( 7 ASHABI COLE STREET OFF AGIDINGBI NEAR ALAUSA ), LAGOS ISLAND ( MAMMAN KONTAGORA HOUSE, 23a MARINA STREET ) with your ID and Oracle number.
- Ask for your “NHF Statement of Account”.
- Or try the FMBN portal at
under “NHF Contributors”.
If your records are missing or wrong, fix it now. Wrong name, wrong Oracle number, or missing deductions will delay your refund.
3. Documents Needed for Application.
Get these ready:
1. *NHF Form 1* – “Application for Refund of NHF Contributions”. Get it free at any FMBN office.
2. *Retirement Letter* from TESCOM
3. *ORACLE Stoppage Letter* – Proof you’re no longer on payroll.
4. *Valid ID* – National ID, Driver’s License, or Passport.
5. *BVN Printout & Bank Statement* – account must be in your name.
6. *2 Passport Photos*
7. *Worker's ID Card,* for example
4. Where to Submit
Take the completed form and documents to any FMBN State Office mentioned above.
You don’t need to travel to Abuja unless your case is complex.
5. How Much Will You Get?
It depends on your basic salary and years of service when it started in Lagos State.
Example: A Educator with Oracle number who contributed for six years ( calculated from June 2020 to December 2026 ) when it started in Lagos State on ₦40,000 basic will get roughly ₦72k – ₦79k excluding interest.
A senior officer with higher basic and 80+ years could get ₦144k to ₦158 excluding interest.
If you took an NHF loan, your contributions were used to offset it first. So check your statement to know your balance.
6. How Long Does It Take?
If your records are clean, FMBN processes refunds in 30–90 days.
Delays happen when names don’t match, or deductions were never remitted. If they delay beyond 90 days, write to FMBN Customer Care:
info@fmbn.gov.ng and copy the CBN Consumer Protection Department:
cpd@cbn.gov.ng
7. Important Warnings
- *Application is free.* Don’t pay anyone “to fast-track” it.
- *If you are death in Service* next of kin can apply with a Letter of Administration.
- *Start now, even if you retired years ago.*
- There’s no time limit for claiming it.
*The Problem:* The Service never educates officers on this. You retire, walk away, and lose money that’s rightfully yours.
*The Solution:* Share this post. Inform retired Officers.
Check your NHF status today. Don’t leave money on the table.
