We Now Have Bigger Problems in Teaching:
While we grew up, we heard that some teachers smoke hard substances. In fact, I remember one Mathematics teacher telling us that most Maths and Physics teachers smoke hard drugs, and that it is what helps them reason and calculate well. But then, they were few of them who did.
Forward to 2012/2013, I got into the teaching field and, wow
, I really found smoking teachers. But the coincidence was that I found more of Mathematics and Physics teachers in that habit. So it seemed to make sense to me: they need it to reason and calculate well. Life continued.
2013 was 13 years ago, right? You don't expect me to see things in the same light I saw them then. So I ask:
The many smoker-teachers that we have in the field today: what is really the problem?
It has become a problem to us now, and I find it more threatening to our society because, since we already are faced with mass exodus of good teachers from the field and into various other fields, and are left with many who are only managing to be present as 'teachers', why should we have many hard-drug smokers among them?
It pisses me off at whenever I come close to an active teacher, on a school day, and within school hours, and I perceive strong smell of Igbo. One even told me that he prefers to smoke loud: according to him, loud doesn't have such a strong smell as Igbo, so it is not easily detected. But why must you smoke?
I find this a threat because I know that teachers teach through what they do, sometimes, more than through what they say. Students know teachers who smoke. They discuss them. They see them as 'guy man', 'man wey sabi', etc. and it only end up setting up their minds to admire what should be condemned.
Why do many teachers smoke?
Imagine a Civic Education teachers leaving the class after a class teaching on 'Dangers of Drug Abuse', and the next teacher to enter the class had his eyes half closed throughout the class, due to weed intoxication. I ask again:
Why una dey smoke?
You see someone dressed for school, then goes to the backyard of the school to 'take one or two' before classes begin. You ask them, and they tell you that they 'smoke responsibly'.
Is there a thing like 'smoking responsibly'?
And, wait! Before you think my message is meant just for male teachers...I have dated a female teacher who smokes/smoked—I don't know if she still does.
Why do teachers smoke?
