REPORT CARDS IN NIGERIAN SCHOOLS
INTRODUCTION
It is that time of the term again, when report cards are issued. Across homes, parents eagerly flip through pages to see grades, averages, and class positions. Schools proudly present compiled scores, reflecting weeks of academic effort.
But beyond the numbers, an important question arises:
WHAT EXACTLY ARE WE MEASURING?
In many report cards, we find familiar remarks:
“There is improvement, but you can do better.”
“Keep it up.”
“There is a drop; work harder.”
While these comments may be well-intentioned, they are often:
* Too vague
* Not actionable
* Lacking direction
Feedback should not confuse, it should be a guide.
Imagine instead:
“Improvement noticed in Mathematics problem-solving, especially in fractions. However, more practice is needed in word problems.”
“Strong participation in class discussions, but written expression in English requires attention, focus on sentence construction.”
Specificity transforms feedback into growth.
THE OVEREMPHASIS ON THE COGNITIVE DOMAIN
Our current system places overwhelming importance on academic scores, the cognitive domain.
But education is broader than that.
According to Benjamin Bloom, learning exists in three domains:
Cognitive (knowledge, thinking)
Affective (attitudes, values, emotions)
Psychomotor (skills, physical coordination)
Sadly, only one is consistently assessed.
WHAT ARE WE IGNORING?
By focusing narrowly on grades, we risk neglecting:
Moral development
Emotional intelligence
Creativity and innovation
Leadership and teamwork
Physical and athletic abilities
Education is not just about what a child knows, but who a child becomes.
EVERY CHILD IS DIFFERENTLY GIFTED
Not all children are wired to excel through traditional academics alone. Some are:
Creators
Athletes
Communicators
Builders
Innovators
When schools fail to recognize this diversity, we unintentionally:
Suppress talents
Mislabel potential
Limit future success
A CALL FOR HOLISTIC REPORTING
It is time to move from score reporting to child development reporting.
Schools should:
Provide detailed, skill-based feedback
Assess behaviour, attitude, and collaboration
Highlight strengths beyond academics
Give clear, actionable improvement steps
AND THE LAST LINES...
If we continue to measure success only by test scores, we will continue to produce individuals who may pass exams, but struggle with life.
Let us raise not just brilliant students, but balanced individuals.
