BEYOND THE CLASSROOM: WHY SKILL ACQUISITION MUST GO HAND-IN-HAND WITH CONVENTIONAL EDUCATION!
As an Educator, long vacation is not just “holiday.” It is a window. A window to shape learners who are not only CERTIFICATE-READY, but also LIFE-READY.
For so long, we have focused only on passing WAEC, NECO, and JAMB. While Academics are important, certificates alone do not guarantee a job, income, or relevance in 2026 Nigeria. The economy has changed. Employers and the market are now asking: “What else can you do?”
That is why "SKILLS ACQUISITION" must run alongside conventional education.
WHY SKILLS MATTER NOW:
1. Bridges the Gap Between School and Reality:
The classroom teaches theory. Skills teaches application. A student who learns Biology and Agricultural science also learns poultry farming or fish processing, can turn knowledge into income immediately after school.
2. Creates Self-Reliance:
With the current cost of living, high transportation, and job scarcity, waiting for “white collar” jobs is risky. A skill gives a student a backup plan and dignity. They become employers, not just job seekers.
3. Builds Confidence and Discipline:
Learning a skill teaches patience, problem-solving, and entrepreneurship, values that also make them better students.
A child who can design a website or bake will carry that same creativity into Mathematics and English.
4. Makes Education Relevant:
When students see how what they learn in school connects to real life, they pay attention more. Education stops being abstract.
MEANINGFUL SKILLS STUDENTS CAN LEARN DURING THIS VACATION:
These skills are practical, in-demand, and can add real value without pulling students away from academics:
1. DIGITAL SKILLS:
•Graphic Design & Canva - For branding, content creation
•Basic Coding/Web Design - Every business needs an online presence
•Content Creation & Video Editing - For YouTube, TikTok, business marketing.
2. VOCATIONAL AND TECHNICAL SKILLS:
•Baking & Catering - Low capital to start, high demand
•Fashion Design & Beading - Creativity + income
•Hair making, Styling, Makeup, Barbing - Service skills that pay daily.
•Show and Bag making.
•Photography and videography.
•Plumbing and Electrical Installation.
•Carpentry and furniture making.
•Tiling and Aluminum fabrication.
•Hat making, gele, fascinators, turbans, Event decoration, bridal handfans and umbrellas.
3. AGRICULTURAL SKILLS:
•Poultry, Fishery, Snailry - Links directly to Biology and Agricultural Science and feeds the nation
•Soap Making, Liquid Wash, Perfume Production - Chemistry in practice.
4.ENTREPRENUERAL AND SOFT SKILLS:
•Financial Literacy & Small Business Management.
•Public Speaking & Communication.
•Customer Service.
MY MESSAGE TO PARENTS, SCHOOLS, AND STUDENTS:
Conventional Education builds the mind. Skills build the hands and the future.
We must stop producing “GRADUATES” who are unemployable. Instead, let us produce problem-solvers.
This vacation, I encourage every student: pick one skill. Learn it well. Master it.
And to School owners: let us partner with skill acquisition centers, bring Trainers into schools, and reward students who are both academically sound and skillful.
Because the GOAL of Education is not just to fill a CERTIFICATE. It is to fill a LIFE.
What skill would you advise your students to start with this vacation?
