*ATTENTION:*
ALL STAKEHOLDERS IN EDUCATION
*SUBJECT: STANDARDIZATION OF ACRONYMS FOR JUNIOR AND SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS: ADOPTION OF "JS" and "SS"*
*1.0 PREAMBLE*
Since the implementation of the 6-3-3-4 / 9-3-4 Education System in 2003, which split Secondary Education into Junior and Senior levels, there has been no uniform practice in the use of acronyms.
We currently have 2 conflicting usages: *JS/JSS* and *SS/SSS.* This has caused confusion in official correspondence, examination records, signboards, and result sheets.
2.0 *JUSTIFICATION*
*FOR STANDARDIZATION*
After careful review, we submit the following 3 grounds for adopting *"JS"* and *"SS"* as the standard:
*2.1 Linguistic Consistency*
All Secondary Institutions in Nigeria bear names like: Junior/Senior *Grammar School,* Junior/Senior *Secondary School,* Junior/Senior *Comprehensive*
*College.*
The dominant identifiers are:
*"Junior/Senior"* + *"School/College"*. The extra *'S'* in JSS/SSS creates redundancy:
*"Junior Secondary*
*School School".*
*2.2 Administrative Practice*
In many States, including Lagos, Junior and Senior Schools operate as separate autonomous entities within the same compound, each headed by a Principal.
The official designation in use is *"Junior School Principal"* and *"Senior School Principal"* — not "JSS Principal" or "SSS Principal".
*2.3 Examination Bodies’ Precedent*
Major Examination Bodies have already set the standard on Certificates issued:
i. *JSC* = Junior
School Certificate
ii. *SSC* = Senior
School Certificate
iii. *WASSC* = West
African Senior
School Certificate
WAEC, NECO, and NABTEB do not use double *'S',* To maintain alignment, our internal usage must match.
*3.0 RESOLUTION / RECOMMENDATION*
In the interest of uniformity, clarity, and professionalism in the Education Industry, it is hereby proposed that:
1 *STANDARD*
*USAGE*
should be : *JS 1,*
*JS 2, and JS 3*
*SS 1, SS 2, SS 3*
and *NOT:*
*JSS 1, JSS 2, JSS 3*
*2. Junior School*
*Senior School*
and *NOT*
*Junior Secondary*
*School*
Or
*Senior Secondary*
*School*
As custodians of knowledge and standards, it behoves us to lead by example.
Thank you for your cooperation towards a uniform and professional Education Sector.
