SEMINAR ON SUCCESSFUL PARENTING
Theme: Successful Parenting – Raising Godly, Responsible and Purposeful Children
Key Scriptures: Proverbs 22:6; Ephesians 6:1–4; Deuteronomy 6:6–7; Psalm 127:3–5
INTRODUCTION
Parenting is one of the greatest responsibilities God has entrusted to mankind.
Children are not merely possessions; they are gifts, assignments and trusts from God.
Psalm 127:3 says:
“Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.”
Successful parenting is therefore not measured only by how wealthy, educated or successful our children become.
True success is when we raise children who know God, love Him, respect others, understand their purpose, make responsible choices and become useful to their generation.
Proverbs 22:6 says:
“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
Parenting requires prayer, intentional training, discipline, communication, sacrifice, example and dependence on God.
1. UNDERSTAND THAT CHILDREN ARE A TRUST FROM GOD
Scriptures: Psalm 127:3–5; 1 Samuel 1:27–28
✓Parents must first understand that children belong to God and have been entrusted to us for a season.
Hannah understood this when she dedicated Samuel to the Lord.
✓Every child has a divine purpose. Therefore, parents should not simply try to make their children become what they want.
✓They should prayerfully discover and nurture the gifts and purpose God has placed in each child.
*Practical application*
Parents should ask:
A. What are my child's strengths?
What gifts has God deposited in this child?
B. What character qualities need development?
C. How can I help this child discover God's purpose?
Am I comparing my child with other children?
✓ Never destroy a child's confidence by constant comparison.
✓ Say to your children:
“God has a purpose for your life, and I will help you discover and fulfil it.”
2. BE THE EXAMPLE YOU WANT YOUR CHILDREN TO FOLLOW
Scriptures: 1 Corinthians 11:1; Titus 2:7; Proverbs 20:7
✓Children learn more from what they see than from what they hear.
A parent may tell a child:
“Don't lie.”
But if the child constantly sees the parent lying, the lesson becomes confusing.
A parent may say:
“Respect people.”
But if the parent constantly insults others, the child learns disrespect.
Parents must model:
* Prayer
* Honesty
* Respect
* Kindness
* Hard work
* Self-control
* Faithfulness
* Forgiveness
* Responsibility
* Love for God
The home is the child's first school, and parents are the child's first teachers.
Before asking, “What is wrong with my child?”, sometimes we need to ask:
“What is my child learning from me?”
3. BUILD A STRONG SPIRITUAL FOUNDATION
Scriptures: Deuteronomy 6:6–7; Joshua 24:15; 2 Timothy 1:5
✓Parents must intentionally introduce their children to God.
Deuteronomy 6:6–7
instructs parents to teach God's Word to their children continually—in the home, during daily activities and throughout life.
✓Do not leave the spiritual development of your children entirely to the church or school.
✓Establish spiritual practices at home:
* Family prayers
* Bible reading
* Scripture memorisation
* Worship
* Church attendance
* Teaching biblical values
* Praying for your children individually
* Discussing their challenges from a biblical perspective
Joshua 24:15 says:
“As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”
Parents must make a deliberate decision:
“My home will be a place where God is honoured.”
4. LOVE YOUR CHILDREN, BUT DO NOT SPOIL THEM
Scriptures: Proverbs 13:24; Proverbs 22:15; Hebrews 12:6,11
✓Successful parenting requires a balance between love and discipline.
Love without discipline can produce entitlement.
Discipline without love can produce resentment.
Children need to know:
“My parents love me, but there are boundaries I must respect.”
✓Discipline should never be driven by uncontrolled anger.
Instead:
* Correct the behaviour.
* Explain why it is wrong.
* Establish appropriate consequences.
* Teach the right behaviour.
* Restore the child afterwards.
Hebrews 12:11 reminds us that discipline may not be pleasant at the moment, but it produces good fruit.
*Important principle:*
* Discipline the child; don't destroy the child's dignity.
* Never use words such as:
“You are useless.”
“You will never amount to anything.”
“You are a disappointment.”
* Correct the action without condemning the child's identity.
* Say:
“What you did was wrong, but you are not a bad person. Let us learn from this and do better.”
5. COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR CHILDREN
Scriptures: James 1:19; Proverbs 15:1
One of the greatest challenges in modern parenting is the communication gap between parents and children.
* Parents should learn to listen before judging.
James 1:19 says:
“Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.”
* Create an environment where children can talk to you.
* Ask them:
“How was your day?”
“What happened at school today?”
“Is anything bothering you?”
“How are you feeling?”
“Is there anything you are afraid to tell me?”
* When children know they can talk to their parents without immediately being condemned, they are more likely to seek parental guidance when facing difficult situations.
* Don't only communicate when your child has done something wrong.
* Talk when things are going well too.
* Build friendship while maintaining authority.
6. GIVE YOUR CHILDREN TIME AND ATTENTION
Scriptures: Ephesians 5:15–16; Psalm 90:12
* One of the most expensive things parents can give their children is not money—it is time.
✓Children may forget the toys you bought, but they often remember the moments you spent with them.
✓Create opportunities for:
Family meals
Conversations
Reading together
Praying together
Playing together
Celebrating achievements
Attending important events
✓Correcting and encouraging them
Parents should watch for the danger of:
“Providing everything materially but being emotionally unavailable.”
* Your child needs more than school fees, clothes, food and gadgets.
* Your child needs your presence, attention, affirmation and affection.
7. TEACH RESPONSIBILITY AND INDEPENDENCE
Scriptures:
Galatians 6:5; Proverbs 6:6–8;
2 Thessalonians 3:10–12
✓Parents should not do everything for their children.
✓Children need to learn responsibility from an early age.
✓Give them age-appropriate responsibilities such as:
* Cleaning their space
* Organising their belongings
* Helping at home
* Caring for personal items
* Managing simple tasks
* Learning to save
* Taking responsibility for mistakes
* Do not constantly rescue children from the consequences of irresponsible behaviour.
✓Teach them:
“You are responsible for your choices.”
A child who learns responsibility at home becomes better prepared for adulthood.
8. PROTECT YOUR CHILDREN FROM NEGATIVE INFLUENCES
Scriptures:
1 Corinthians 15:33; Proverbs 4:23
The world is competing for the hearts and minds of our children.
✓Parents must pay attention to:
* Friends
* Social media
* Internet content
* Television
* Music
* Games
* Relationships
* Language
* Online influences
1 Corinthians 15:33 says:
“Evil communications corrupt good manners.”
This does not mean parents should isolate their children from society. Rather, parents should teach discernment and monitor influences wisely.
✓Know your child's friends.
✓Know what they are watching.
✓Know what they are listening to.
✓Know what they are learning online.
✓You cannot guide what you refuse to understand.
9. PRAY FOR YOUR CHILDREN
Scriptures:
Job 1:5; Isaiah 54:13; 3 John 1:4
✓Never underestimate the power of a praying parent.
Job regularly prayed for his children.
Isaiah 54:13 declares:
“And all thy children shall be taught of the LORD; and great shall be the peace of thy children.”
✓Pray for:
Their salvation
Their character
Their education
Their friendships
Their future
Their health
Their decisions
Their protection
Their marriages
Their careers
Their relationship with God
Their fulfilment of divine purpose
✓ Don't only correct your children with your mouth; cover them with your prayers.
10. BUILD A HOME OF LOVE, UNITY AND PEACE
Scriptures: Colossians 3:12–15; Ephesians 4:31–32
✓Children are deeply affected by the atmosphere in their homes.
Constant fighting, insults, bitterness and hostility can affect a child's emotional and social development.
✓Parents should therefore strive to create a home where there is:
Love + Respect + Forgiveness + Prayer + Communication + Peace.
✓Husbands and wives should remember that how they treat each other is also teaching their children what marriage looks like.
*CONCLUSION*
Successful parenting is not about raising perfect children.
It is about raising children who are:
Godly, disciplined, responsible, confident, compassionate, hardworking, respectful and purposeful.
We cannot control every decision our children will eventually make, but we can determine what foundation we give them.
Remember these five principles:
1. Pray for your children.
2. Model what you want them to become.
3. Teach them God's Word.
4. Discipline them with love.
5. Give them time, attention and guidance.
Proverbs 22:6 reminds us:
“Train up a child in the way he should go…”
FINAL CHARGE TO PARENTS
✓ Don't merely raise children who will survive in the world. ✓ Raise children who will make a godly difference in the world.
✓ Don't only prepare them to earn money.
✓ Prepare them to have good character.
✓ Don't only prepare them for examinations.
Prepare them for life.
✓ Don't only give them an education.
Give them values.
✓ Don't only give them instructions.
Give them an example.
✓ And above all:
Give them God.
