Getting Familiar with the EYFS and Checkpoint Subjects: Part 1
Under the British Curriculum structure, the subjects within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework are referred to as *Learning and Development (L&D) Areas.*
There are seven core areas:
1. Communication and Language (C&L)
2. Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED)
3. Physical Development (PD)
4. Literacy
5. Mathematics
6. Understanding the World (UW)
7. Expressive Arts and Design (EAD)
*Note:*
A preschool setting may combine items 1 and 4 into a single area titled Literacy, Communication and Language (LC&L).
*Checkpoint Subjects (Years 1–9)*
The subjects for primary and lower secondary levels are the same. They are called Checkpoint subjects and are as follows:
1. English Language
2. English as a Second Language (ESL)
3. Mathematics
4. Science
5. Humanities (Past, People & Places)

10. Music
11. Physical Education (PE)
12. Religious Studies

These subjects align closely with the structure of the new NERDC curriculum.
