Working for a living

What you do for a living must contribute to, generate, or create opportunities for the things you need for living: nourishment (of body and mind), mental well-being, friendships, passion, health, time (forming good habits that help us maximize our time), rest, self-improvement, purpose, love, and family.

If what you do for a living is not making room for, or generating the above, start to work to change that. The thing you do for a living should not be compromising your living well. Take each of the above seriously, and start to figure out how to derive them from your work. If your work is not allowing you to experience a full life, you are not working for a living; you are living to work.

I have said before that your work must breathe life into you. If it is not doing so, it could be doing the opposite. Pay attention to your work and life. If you are doing something for a living, make sure it is not just keeping you alive, but also enabling and allowing you to live. A person on life support is alive, but...

"Don't get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life."
Dolly Parton

"Never forget the reason you needed a job. When you start living for the job, remember why you are doing it."
Leslie George
