WHY THE NIGERIAN TEACHER MUST CHANGE CONTENT, METHODS, STYLE AND FORM OF TEACHING

NIGERIA IS STILL TEACHING CHILDREN FOR A WORLD THAT NO LONGER EXISTS

A child starting Primary 1 today will enter the workforce around 2040 and onwards. Yet many Nigerian classrooms are still preparing that child for the economy of the 1980s. That is the crisis we face.

If the Nigerian teacher does not urgently change content, methods, style and form of teaching, we will continue to graduate young people who can pass exams but cannot survive, create, or lead in the world of AI, automation, and global competition.

*1. THE CONTENT MUST CHANGE: FROM CERTIFICATES TO CAPABILITIES*
Right now we place too much emphasis on memorising notes and reproducing what the teacher said. But the world of 2040 and beyond will be shaped by *artificial intelligence, automation, renewable energy, biotechnology, digital finance and global competition*. A certificate alone will not be enough.

The content must change at every level:
- *Primary school*: Beyond reading, writing and mathematics, children should learn *digital skills, basic financial literacy, gardening, first aid, public speaking and simple problem-solving*.
- *Junior Secondary*: Students should be introduced to *coding, artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship, debate, critical thinking, environmental awareness and practical life skills*.
- *Senior Secondary*: We must stop forcing every child into the old Science, Arts or Commercial boxes. Students should follow real career pathways such as:
- Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science
- Engineering and Manufacturing
- Healthcare and Biotechnology
- Business and Global Finance
- Modern Agriculture and Food Processing
- Film, Animation and Digital Media
- Law, Governance and Public Policy

Before leaving school, every Nigerian student should have more than WAEC or NECO. They should leave with *a recognised digital skill, practical project experience, confidence in public speaking, work/apprenticeship exposure, and either a business idea or portfolio*.

*2. THE METHODS MUST CHANGE: FROM MEMORY TO MAKING*
The current method rewards students who can cram and forget. But employers in 2040 will ask: "What problem can you solve?"

The Nigerian teacher must shift to methods that build value:
- *Project-based learning*: Let students build projects instead of just writing notes.
- *Problem-solving*: Let them tackle real community problems — water, waste, power, agriculture.
- *Teamwork and apprenticeships*: Let them work in teams, in workshops, farms, laboratories, offices and industries.
- *Technology integration*: Teach with AI tools, coding platforms, and digital media, not just chalk and textbook.

*3. THE STYLE MUST CHANGE: FROM AUTHORITY TO EMPOWERMENT*
The old style of "I talk, you listen" produces compliance, not creativity. The child of today needs a teacher who is a coach, mentor and guide.

The new style must:
- Encourage *questions, debate and critical thinking* instead of silence.
- Build *confidence in public speaking* and communication.
- Teach *innovation and risk-taking*, not fear of failure.
- Recognize that children are growing up in a digital, fast, and anxious world — so teachers must also teach emotional intelligence and adaptability.

*4. THE FORM MUST CHANGE: FROM EXAMS TO EVIDENCE*
We cannot keep assessing students with only one final examination. That form belongs to the past.

The new form of assessment must include:
- *Portfolios* that show what a student can actually do.
- *Continuous assessment through projects* and practicals.
- *Industry exposure* so students understand work before they graduate.
- *Multiple pathways* so a child gifted in animation is not forced to pass Further Maths to be considered "intelligent".

*CONCLUSION: TEACH FOR 2040 and beyond, NOT 1980*
Nigeria cannot become prosperous with an education system that belongs to the past. The purpose of education should not be to produce millions of young people waiting for government jobs. It should be to raise *problem-solvers, builders, innovators and employers*.

The child entering school today will live in the future. Our curriculum, our classrooms, and our teachers must get there before they do.

It is time for Nigerian teachers to change content, change methods, change style, and change form. The future of our children — and of Nigeria — depends on it.

I think we need to communicate this to the people writing the curriculum to act immediately on this insightful enlightened information so that we will not continue to waste our children's future. My opinion.
