SCHOOL HEAD TEACHER

THE ROLE OF THE HEAD TEACHER

The head teacher is one of the key leaders in a school.

The role goes beyond supervising teachers or maintaining discipline. A good head teacher provides instructional leadership, administrative direction, staff support, learner protection, and coordination to ensure that the school operates effectively.

The head teacher should be both a leader and a facilitator, helping teachers do their best work while keeping the school's educational goals at the centre.

KEY ROLES OF THE HEAD TEACHER

1. Provide Educational Leadership

The head teacher provides direction for teaching and learning.

They should ensure that:

* Lessons are properly planned and delivered.

* The curriculum is effectively implemented.

* Teaching standards are maintained.

* Learners' progress is monitored.

* Areas requiring improvement are identified.

2. Supervise and Support Teachers

Supervision should not be about looking for faults. It should help teachers improve.

A good head teacher:

* Observes classroom practice.

* Provides constructive feedback.

* Identifies teachers' support needs.

* Encourages professional development.

* Recognizes good performance.

Effective supervision combines accountability with support.

3. Promote Professional Development

Teachers need continuous learning because educational practices continue to evolve.

The head teacher can encourage:

* Workshops.

* Coaching and mentoring.

* Peer learning.

* Lesson-study activities.

* Professional courses.

* Sharing of best practices.

4. Manage School Discipline

The head teacher helps establish clear behavioural expectations for both learners and staff.

Effective discipline should be:

* Fair.

* Consistent.

* Respectful.

* Appropriate.

* Focused on correction and development.

The head teacher should model the professionalism expected from everyone in the school.

5. Promote a Positive School Culture

The head teacher has significant influence on the atmosphere of the school.

A positive school culture encourages:

Respect + Collaboration + Accountability + Inclusion + Continuous Improvement

Teachers should feel that they are part of a professional team rather than simply employees being monitored.

6. Coordinate School Activities

The head teacher coordinates various aspects of school life, including:

* Timetables.

* Assemblies.

* Meetings.

* Examinations.

* School events.

* Staff responsibilities.

* Academic programmes.

Effective coordination reduces confusion and helps the school function smoothly.

7. Monitor Learners' Progress

The head teacher should ensure that learner performance is regularly reviewed.

Assessment data can help identify:

* Learning gaps.( see my previous posts "identifying learning gaps")

* High-performing learners.

* Learners requiring additional support.

* Subjects requiring intervention.

* Areas where teaching strategies may need improvement.

8. Communicate With Parents

The head teacher often serves as an important link between the school and families.

They should encourage communication that is:

* Respectful.

* Timely.

* Clear.

* Professional.

* Solution-focused.

9. Promote Child Safety and Well-being

The head teacher has an important responsibility to ensure that appropriate safeguarding and safety procedures are implemented.This includes responding appropriately to concerns involving bullying, abuse, accidents, unsafe environments, and other risks to learners.

10. Manage School Resources

The head teacher helps ensure that school resources are properly used and maintained.

These may include:

* Teaching materials.

* Classrooms.

* Furniture.

* ICT equipment.

* Books.

* School facilities.

Resources should be managed responsibly and transparently.

11. Resolve Conflicts

Disagreements can occur between learners, teachers, parents, or members of the school community. A good head teacher listens to all relevant sides, investigates appropriately, and works toward fair and constructive solutions.

12. Model Professionalism

A head teacher cannot effectively demand professionalism from teachers while demonstrating the opposite.

Teachers observe how their leader:

* Communicates.

* Handles pressure.

* Treats staff.

* Responds to mistakes.

* Makes decisions.

* Accepts feedback.

* Leadership is demonstrated through behaviour, not position alone.

🏆 HOW TO BECOME THE BEST HEADTEACHER IN YOUR SCHOOL

Being a headteacher is more than having an office, giving instructions, and supervising teachers.

A great headteacher sets the standard, builds people, solves problems, and creates an environment where teachers and students can succeed.

Here is how to become the best headteacher in your school:

1. LEAD BY EXAMPLE.
Don't expect teachers to be punctual, disciplined, prepared, and professional if you do not demonstrate those qualities yourself.

2. HAVE A CLEAR VISION.
Know where you want your school to go. Your teachers should understand the direction and work towards the same goal.

3. KNOW YOUR TEACHERS.
Understand their strengths, weaknesses, challenges, and areas where they need support.

4. DON'T LEAD FROM YOUR OFFICE ALONE.
Visit classrooms. Observe lessons. Know what is happening in your school academically and socially.

5. BE FAIR TO EVERYONE.
Avoid favouritism. Teachers may forgive a difficult leader, but they will struggle to respect an unfair one.

6. COMMUNICATE CLEARLY.
Don't assume people understand your expectations. Give clear instructions and make sure everyone knows what is expected of them.

7. CORRECT WITHOUT HUMILIATING.
When a teacher makes a mistake, address the issue professionally. Correction should help people improve, not destroy their confidence.

8. SUPPORT YOUR TEACHERS TO GROW.
Organise training, share useful ideas, mentor staff, and encourage continuous professional development.

9. SOLVE PROBLEMS EARLY.
Small problems ignored today can become major crises tomorrow. Deal with issues before they grow.

10. BUILD A STRONG TEAM.
A successful school is not built by one brilliant headteacher. It is built by a united team of committed people.

11. APPRECIATE GOOD WORK.
Celebrate hardworking teachers. A simple word of appreciation can motivate people to continue giving their best.

12. DELEGATE RESPONSIBILITIES.
You cannot do everything alone. Give people responsibilities, trust them to work, and hold them accountable.

13. MAINTAIN DISCIPLINE WITHOUT CREATING FEAR.
Your teachers should respect your leadership and the school's standards—not constantly work because they are afraid of you.

14. BUILD TRUST WITH PARENTS.
Listen to parents professionally, communicate clearly, and protect their confidence in the school.

15. NEVER STOP LEARNING.
Education is changing. The best headteachers continue improving their leadership, management, communication, and educational skills.

The best headteacher is not the person who controls everything.

The best headteacher builds strong systems, develops competent teachers, and creates a school that can continue functioning excellently even when the headteacher is not physically present.

IF YOUR HEADTEACHER IS NOT DOING THESE THINGS, THEN YOU NEED TO LOOK CLOSELY AT THE LEADERSHIP OF YOUR SCHOOL

A headteacher is not simply the person who sits in the office, signs documents, gives instructions and disciplines students.

There is much more to the job.

A headteacher is responsible for helping to make sure that teachers are teaching, students are learning, staff are supported, school systems are working and the school is moving in the right direction.

So, what are the REAL roles of a headteacher?

1. A HEADTEACHER MUST SUPERVISE TEACHING AND LEARNING 📚

A headteacher should know what is happening inside the classrooms.

They should monitor lessons, review teaching practices, check learners' progress and provide constructive feedback to teachers.

Not just:
“Have you taught your lesson?”

But:

“How effective was the lesson, and what did the learners actually understand?”

Instructional supervision is a core part of school leadership.

2. A HEADTEACHER MUST DEVELOP TEACHERS 👩‍🏫

A good headteacher does not only look for teachers' mistakes.

They identify areas where teachers need improvement and create opportunities for coaching, mentoring, training and professional development.

A teacher who is not growing can eventually stop improving.

3. A HEADTEACHER MUST SET CLEAR STANDARDS

Teachers should know:

• What is expected of them
• How lessons should be prepared
• How learners should be assessed
• How discipline should be handled
• How records should be kept
• How parents should be treated
• What professional conduct looks like

You cannot demand standards that you have never clearly communicated.

4. A HEADTEACHER MUST HOLD PEOPLE ACCOUNTABLE

Being friendly with staff is good.

But leadership also requires accountability.

If a teacher is consistently late, fails to prepare lessons, neglects learners or repeatedly ignores school procedures, the headteacher should address it.

Correction is part of leadership.

5. A HEADTEACHER MUST SUPPORT TEACHERS

A headteacher should not make teachers feel that they are alone whenever they encounter a difficult situation.

When a teacher has a classroom-management problem, a difficult parent, a struggling learner or a professional challenge, the headteacher should help find a solution.

Leadership is not only about giving instructions; it is also about providing support.

6. A HEADTEACHER MUST PROTECT INSTRUCTIONAL TIME

Unnecessary interruptions, excessive meetings and poorly organised activities can take valuable time away from teaching.

A good headteacher protects the time teachers need to teach and students need to learn.

7. A HEADTEACHER MUST KNOW THE LEARNERS' ACADEMIC CONDITION

The headteacher should be able to ask:

Which learners are struggling?

Why are they struggling?

What intervention is being provided?

Are they improving?

If nobody is asking these questions, a school can be busy without actually improving learning.

8. A HEADTEACHER MUST HANDLE DISCIPLINE FAIRLY

Discipline should not depend on who the learner's parent is.

The same behaviour should be addressed consistently, fairly and according to the school's policies.

A school cannot build a culture of discipline through favouritism.

9. A HEADTEACHER MUST BUILD A HEALTHY STAFF CULTURE

Teachers should be able to work together without unnecessary fear, hostility or unhealthy competition.

A good headteacher encourages teamwork, respect, communication and professionalism.

10. A HEADTEACHER MUST LISTEN

Teachers have useful information because they are directly involved in classroom activities every day.

A wise headteacher listens before making important decisions.

Listening does not make a leader weak. It makes the leader informed.

11. A HEADTEACHER MUST COMMUNICATE WITH PARENTS

Parents should not hear from the school only when there is a problem.

A headteacher should help build a healthy relationship between the school and parents through clear, respectful and timely communication.

12. A HEADTEACHER MUST IMPLEMENT SCHOOL POLICIES

A policy sitting inside a file is not enough.

The headteacher must ensure that relevant policies are understood and actually followed by staff, learners and other stakeholders.

13. A HEADTEACHER MUST MANAGE SCHOOL RESOURCES RESPONSIBLY

School resources must be properly planned, used, protected and accounted for.

This includes learning materials, facilities, equipment, records and other resources available to the school.

14. A HEADTEACHER MUST CARE ABOUT SCHOOL SAFETY

The headteacher should take the safety and wellbeing of learners and staff seriously.

A safe school is not created by simply putting rules on the wall.

Safety requires supervision, preparation and action.

15. A HEADTEACHER MUST BUILD A VISION FOR THE SCHOOL

A school should not simply move from Monday to Friday, from one term to another.

The headteacher should be asking:

Where are we going?

What do we want to improve?

What should our school become known for?

What must we change to get there?

16. A HEADTEACHER MUST LEAD BY EXAMPLE

If you want teachers to be punctual, be punctual.

If you want teachers to respect learners, respect them.

If you want teachers to be professional, demonstrate professionalism.

People watch what leaders do more than what leaders say.

17. A HEADTEACHER MUST ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY

When something goes wrong, the first response should not always be:

“Which teacher caused this?”

Sometimes the better question is:

“What can we change in our system to prevent this from happening again?”

That is leadership.

---

🔥 THE REAL TEST OF A HEADTEACHER

A headteacher should not be judged only by how strict they are.

Neither should they be judged by how many meetings they attend or how many instructions they give.

Ask:

Are teachers becoming better?

Are learners improving?

Are school systems becoming stronger?

Are problems being solved?

Are parents gaining confidence in the school?

Is the school moving forward?

Because a headteacher's real impact is seen in what improves under their leadership.

👉 If you are a headteacher, which of these responsibilities are you currently working hardest on?

And teachers, what do you believe is the most important role of a head teacher ?

Dear Head of School,

If you do not have policies in place to protect your teachers, your school may eventually pay the price.

Protect your teachers.

Create policies that promote a healthy work environment, clear expectations, fair treatment, professional growth, and proper channels for addressing concerns.

Because without teachers, a school cannot function.

Many schools are struggling today because they failed to protect one of their most valuable assets: their teachers.

You may not fully understand the value of a good teacher until that teacher leaves.

Teachers are not just employees. They are the people carrying your vision into the classroom every single day.

Protect your teachers.
Value your teachers.
Listen to your teachers.
Put the right policies in place.

Because when you take care of the people who take care of your school, everyone benefits.
