EDUCATION MINISTRY SANCTIONS STUDENTS IN VIRAL VIDEO

The Ondo State Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology has cracked down on a group of secondary school students from Oyemekun Grammar School, Aquinas Secondary School, and CAC Grammar School following a viral “sign-out” video that sparked widespread public outrage across social media.

The video, which circulated heavily on platforms like TikTok and Facebook following the completion of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), showed graduating students engaging in chaotic and undisciplined behaviour, including tearing uniforms and chanting inappropriate slogans.

In an emergency meeting convened at the Ministry’s headquarters in Akure, government officials and school administrators gathered to address the breach of conduct.

The Ministry has handed down the following immediate sanctions to serve as a deterrent to other schools across the state:
The official school testimonials and WASSCE results of the 17 students identified in the video will be withheld until further notice, and their names will be entered into the “black book” of their respective schools.

All principals have been directed to open a “black book” for student misconduct, and senior officers at the affected schools have received official queries for failing to adequately supervise and allowing the celebrations to degenerate into lawlessness.

For those in the video who are not in the terminal class, the Ministry has directed that they be expelled from school immediately.

The Commissioner advised all parents to consistently counsel their children against actions that could mar their futures, stating that the measures taken by the Ministry will serve as a deterrent to other students who might consider engaging in similar acts in the future.

Addressing the press after the disciplinary hearing, the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun, emphasized that while celebrating academic milestones is natural, the government maintains zero tolerance for activities that damage the moral fabric and reputation of the state’s educational system.

He stated, “The growing ‘sign-out’ culture among secondary school students must be guided by decency. We will not fold our arms and watch the discipline we have painstakingly instilled in our schools be eroded for the sake of social media clout. We must defend the integrity of our education system in the state. We will not allow those who are not ready to be in school to disturb our institutions.”

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Akindele Ige, advised principals to proactively share information with the Zonal Education Office and the Ministry to address unrest before it escalates.

Parents and the graduating students involved have been summoned to the Ministry today to receive their official punishment letters.

From a teacher’s point of view, I can see why SS3 students do this “signing out” after WAEC - they’re excited, free, celebrating end of 6 years but these pictures show several reckless behaviours that carry real dangers.👇

Students have vandalized school uniforms with marker/pen writings and drawings. There’s also close body contact/hugging that looks inappropriate for school setting.

The last time I checked, school uniform represents the school. Scribbling on it indirectly teaches that school rules don’t matter once exams finish.
Students carry that same attitude into the university and subsequently, workplace.

What starts as ‘fun photo’ can become unwanted touching, peer pressure, or “dare” games. Some students regret these photos later. WAEC is over, but self respect and personal boundaries still matter.

Primary pupils and JSS students see SS3 seniors do this every year and probably think “That’s how we graduate”.
It becomes a cycle. Next year JSS3 will copy and even escalate to worse scenarios.

My perspective as a teacher

It’s not about killing their joy:
Students deserve to celebrate.
We agree!
The big question is : ‘how do they celebrate?’

To the sudent reading this,
I want you to know that freedom after WAEC is real but freedom without sense leads to regret.
Protect your dignity, your uniform, and each other while celebrating this milestone.

Dear fellow teachers/ parents,

Our job isn’t to shame or castigate them. It’s to redirect that energy before someone gets hurt, hara$$ed, arrested or even ki!!£d.

Ondo Government Withholds WASSCE Results, Expels Students Over Sign-Out Misconduct

The Ondo State Government has withheld the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results and testimonials of some graduating secondary school students following acts of misconduct during their sign-out celebrations.

The State Ministry of Education disclosed that the disciplinary action was taken after 17 final-year students were found to have engaged in chaotic and unruly behaviour after completing their final examination.

According to the ministry, the affected students were captured in a viral video tearing their school uniforms, chanting unusual slogans, and engaging in acts considered inconsistent with acceptable standards of discipline.

The students involved were identified as being from Oyemekun Grammar School, Aquinas Secondary School, and CAC Grammar School, all located in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

The government said the sanctions were imposed to uphold discipline and discourage acts of indiscipline among students in the state's public secondary schools.

Is it the state that paid for the WAEC exams? If yes, it may have right in withholding. But if the students paid for the WAEC exams, then the state ministry of education has no legal right to withhold the WAEC results. The ministry can punish them in other ways with the law. Two wrongs, they do not make a right.

Hmmmmmnnn!! I don't think the results will be held permanently but our children these days need to be punished for their impunity. They must feel the pain if their wrong doings. They are becoming something else.

I think it is high time to know where we are directing the future of this present generation to.

Churches don't want them to be disciplined, the school which has been the last resort is being weakened, those who are trying their best to restructure this trend are being castigated.
I am very skeptical and afraid what lies ahead.

Can you highlight the laws by which they can be punished?

In my school, we don't tolerate lateness.
I put in a very strenuous punishment for late comers. This worked 100%.
Some parents said the measures are too rigourous , while some parents supported it.

We lessened the punishment, here we are, the trends sprang like a wounded lion.

Being a disciplinarian who wants a better future for my students as I did for their predecessors. I mounted back the old disciplinarian actions. Behold, the trend vaporised again.

Do not let us deceive ourselves, the more we hold up to the truth, the better we build up the future of our youth.

We are the products of the generation that went through discipline, and we achieved greatness from it.

Thank you for your contribution. I sincerely appreciate your concern and the points raised.

As educators, our aim is not to punish students harshly but to build discipline, responsibility, punctuality, and good character. Every measure taken is intended to correct and guide our students towards becoming better individuals in the future.

We also understand the importance of ensuring that disciplinary actions remain fair, reasonable, and in the best interest of the child. The cooperation and understanding of parents are highly valuable as we work together to raise responsible future leaders.

Discipline and love must go hand in hand, and with the support of parents, we can achieve the desired results.

Please remember to discipline with love so that you will not land in kirikiri

We are disciplining in love, and the youth are becoming truants that even the Government cannot control, how much the parents and school.

In a normal school setting, where discipline is upheld, students cannot displayed the vulgarism being showcased by the students mentioned.

I come in peace.

Great contribution. The error we make as teachers and school owners is that we think flogging is the only way we can instil discipline. Because we were flogged anyhow by our teachers during our time. The world has evolved, and we must evolve also. The decision to stop flogging learners was not taken by Nigeria. It was a United Nation decision agreed to by the countries that members. As long as Nigeria is members, it becomes binding. Nigeria had to domesticate it. States have also domesticated it. What we need to do is to come together; School and Family, have deep conversation on what to do and how to move further. Think of creative and innovative ways of disciplining the learners with necessarily canning them. The lives of the 70s, 80s, and 90s are not the same as today. A lot of distractions are present today than in those days. Our parents had dignity and integrity and were content. But can that be said of us who are parents of today?

It is better they review this because Nigeria standard in not a Western world type . There are numerous reasons Nigeria cannot and millions of reasons Nigeria child easily go err .
In all discipline should be key !
Home , church, mosque, school and the media .

You can't stand in isolation. If you go to UK you know that Nigeria children are great.
