AN INJURY TO ONE IS AN INJURY TO ALL
The news of the abduction of teachers and students in Esinle, Orire Local Government, Ogbomoso, Oyo State since Friday is heartbreaking and disturbing. To make matters worse, a painful video clip was released yesterday showing how one of the innocent students was killed by these wicked criminals. This is no longer a situation that should be treated with ordinary statements and memos alone.
With due respect to the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), this is the time for action, not just circulars asking members to pray. Prayer is important, but practical and united action is also necessary. When a single doctor was kidnapped, doctors across Nigeria stood together and went on strike until serious attention was given to the matter. Why should teachers continue to act powerless when the lives of educators and students are at stake?
An injury to one is truly an injury to all.
We therefore call on the NUT leadership in Oyo State to immediately declare a statewide strike action and organize peaceful protests across the state until all abducted teachers and students are safely released. Teachers should not continue to work as though nothing has happened while their colleagues and students remain in captivity.
This is about the safety, dignity, and welfare of every teacher and student in our educational system. Silence and weak responses will only encourage more attacks.
