Education Vs Miseducation

Based on my academic knowledge and years of collective experience, I believe education is a systematic, continuous, innovative and dynamic process by which a society is developed through exposing and inculcating in both young and old members values with which they apply for the development of the society. One of my reasons for this submission is that, we have more jobless youths and adults with less focus in our society where there are abundant resources and opportunities all around us. Our people are more orderly when they travel abroad than when in Nigeria. Does it make sense for someone to spend huge funds and time to attend university only for that same person to come back and learn catering, trade or tailoring. Such a person could just learn that after primary or secondary school and then use the school expenses to equip his or her business. Please, I'm not saying people should not go to higher institutions. Admission should be based on the importance of the course to the student and the society not just for certification only. Adequate counselling and group guidance should be the reason why learners are placed in various classes from primary, secondary and higher institutions of learning. University graduates should not be rated over others who did not attend or did not finish even secondary schools but are serious and successful in their various occupations and trades in the society. I think our society has put too many values on paper certificates than it's worth. I stand to be corrected.

Any learning experience or instruction that a learner is exposed to must be used positively or otherwise cannot be called education therefore, education is for progress of an individual and the society. For example, both an armed robber and a police officer are instructed on the use of a gun. While the armed robber is designated a criminal, the police is called a hero and rewarded if he or she uses the gun to protect members of the society from the armed robber hence educated. Likewise, a professor of English language would be regarded as uneducated if he or she cannot fit in his native home town where the English language is not spoken there if he or she can't speak the native dialect.

This is a thought-provoking perspective. Education should indeed go beyond acquiring certificates; it should develop knowledge, skills, character, and the ability to contribute meaningfully to society. While formal education remains valuable, practical skills, vocational training, and entrepreneurship deserve equal respect.

A society that values competence, integrity, and impact above mere credentials is more likely to achieve sustainable development. The challenge is not education itself, but ensuring that it is relevant, purposeful, and responsive to the needs of individuals and society.
