Coalition of School Principals in Sierra Leone Withdraw From 2025 WASSCE, Issue 72-Hour Ultimatum

A coalition of school principals from across Sierra Leone has announced they will not take part in the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), raising serious concerns about the operations of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

In a formal letter dated April 25, 2025, the Coalition for Principals’ Solidarity declared that no principal under its banner will participate in any part of the WASSCE process. The group also directed all teachers nationwide to withdraw from WAEC-related duties, including invigilation and supervision.

The letter was addressed to the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education and copied to several high-level institutions, including the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) – Sierra Leone, the Inspector General of Police, the Armed Forces, Civil Society Organizations, Parents’ Associations, the Media, and the Office of the Chief Minister.

According to the coalition, WAEC has shown _*“a lack of transparency, disregard for educational stakeholders, and failure to uphold examination integrity,”*_ leading to the current standoff.

As part of its protest, the coalition announced plans for peaceful demonstrations at WAEC district offices, including those in the Western Region. It also called on parents especially mothers to join the movement in defense of students’ educational futures.

_*The group has issued a 72-hour ultimatum, demanding that WAEC remove all scannable materials from examination centers and find alternative locations for conducting exams. They made it clear that schools under the coalition will not host WAEC exams under the current conditions.*_

In a bold move, the principals are also calling on the government to introduce a new international examination body to replace WAEC, saying the current system no longer reflects fairness or professionalism.....

International credibility for a national examination body will be filled with protocols compared to a subcontinental one of old reputations. They'd better think twice.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved the adoption of the computer based examination (CBE) for all O'level exams by the four examination bodies (WAEC, NECO, NABTEB, NBAIS). In addition, candidates' results are to now have NIN, passport, and date of birth. This is to guard against malpractices, identity theft, and impersonation. The implementation is with immediate effect.

The last written O'level examination we will witness will be the NECO Examination commencing next month (June). Every other examination will now be CBT commencing from the 2025 WAEC GCE.

WAEC Set To Fully Adopt Computer-Based WASSCE By 2026

The West African Examinations Council has reaffirmed plans to migrate the West African Senior School Certificate Examination,WASSCE, to full Computer-Based Testing (CBT) by 2026.

Head of National Office, Dr. Amos Dangut, gave the assurance on Tuesday in Abuja during a sensitisation meeting with members of the National Assembly Committee on Education.

He noted that the transition, which began with private candidates in 2024, had recorded “significant progress” and would be scaled up nationwide.

Dangut explained that mock sessions and online practice platforms would be introduced to help candidates familiarise themselves with the system, stressing that no student would be left behind.

“We have conducted five exams already, one for private candidates and one for school candidates, and by 2026, deployment will be massive,” he said.

On concerns about infrastructure and cyber risks, Dangut assured stakeholders that WAEC had successfully conducted exams in hard-to-reach areas without disruptions.

He added that candidates’ performances in CBT had been “empirically better” than in paper-based tests.

The Senate and House of Representatives pledged full support for the rollout. Senator Ekong Samson, Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Basic and Secondary Education, said parliament would work to increase budgetary allocation to education.

Similarly, Rep. Oboku Oforji urged WAEC to establish at least one CBT centre in each of Nigeria’s 774 local government areas before the 2026 deadline.

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, described the migration as a “historic step” that aligns with ongoing reforms in curriculum, infrastructure, and digital learning tools.

“With WAEC leading this transition, we are confident that the credibility and merit-based outcomes of our examinations will be further secured,” he said.
